there is a LOT of misinformation about israel and palestine out there (from both social media and mainstream news), and even though i used to work in news it’s even been hard for me to parse. the jewish leftist publication Jewish Currents has been doing the TREMENDOUS and difficult work of compiling an ongoing, constantly updating explainer of what happened, what’s happening, how we got here, what claims online are true, and more. bookmark it, share it with friends who are confused, read THE WHOLE THING yourself (even i learned some things i didn’t know before), and come back to it in the coming days.
jewish currents has continued some really good reporting, bringing firsthand accounts both from gaza and the west bank. please keep reading!
another publication you can trust is +972 Magazine. they’re run by Palestinian and Israeli journalists. Their Twitter and their reporters’ Twitter is the most active right now but their IG and Facebook are important to follow as well.

any reporters or academics who work for any of these publications are worth following on Twitter AND IG as well - they’re often posting updates faster than the main accounts.

if you are feeling hopeless right now watching what is happening in palestine and you’ve already done a lot of what’s been suggested - resharing palestinian and leftist jewish voices, educating yourself on the topic from trustworthy news sources and organizers, following and learning about BDS and getting involved with it locally, calling your representatives if you live in the US or another country whose government supports israel - i need you to take what you’ve seen online and talk to offline friends and family about it. this could be anyone from very offline friends and family to your faraway friend who is only on one or two platforms. they are not seeing what you are seeing on your very curated feeds - they are seeing either deliberate misinfo, sanitized news propaganda, or barely anything at all.
pick 2 people in your life who aren’t as plugged in as you are. have casual conversations about it. connect with them on a personal level. these do not have to be people diametrically opposed to you, don’t waste time trying to convince people who are on a different wavelength of reality. i mean the people who just arent clued the fuck in. talk about this issue (and any others that come up) regularly, what you heard, what you read, what you saw. share the sources for those things with them when it’s appropriate, talk up anywhere that was helpful for you to learn. you know these people best as their friend or family, you know best how to empathize with them and get them to care or to get involved. if they seem interested, get them to talk to 2 more people. have them join you in the things you’re doing, have them call representatives and join local organizing with you.
i know in our circles online it may seem like the most urgent thing happening (bc it is!) but there are many people just going about their fucking day right now. you HAVE to help wake them up too. and this goes for any issue. and it may take time and chipping away at it and gently prodding people and making concessions and having a few uncomfortable conversations to hold their hand to get them there ideologically and teaching them but that is our responsibility. for every post you reshare online how many people in your life have you spoken to? how many IRL or phone or text conversations have you had? these things HAVE to be done in tandem. it’s worth it, even if it’s only 1 or 2 people.

ALTI think this person on reddit summed up the youtube adblocker situation perfectly. my reaction to this is not “oh man guess I’ll watch ads.” its, “well, I guess I’ll just do something more productive with my time.” I highly doubt any adblock user is going to willingly go back to watching ads. so what actually happens is youtube loses a functionally tiny amount of its userbase–because adblockers weren’t even losing them a significant amount of money in the first place(!)–and a bunch of adblock users move on to something else. what a fantastic waste of time and effort

Team YouTube waiting five days to address this, ‘both sideing’ the situation where there’s clearly only one person in the wrong, SSSniperwolf and teams YouTube both posting their statements 14 hours ago… yeah, this is gross, their statement is a joke

jacksfilms made a second channel to react to sssniperwolf’s lazy reaction videos in which she oftentimes posts other people’s content without credit, Jack called her out for stealing content among other things, no one is above criticism and she deserved to be called out a long, long time agoshe then doxxed him and went to his home (she has over 30 million followers on YouTube) and showed up at his front door, team YouTube waited 5 days to address the situation and now said both sides were in the wrong, which is an insane take
it’s worth noting too that like, on jjjacksfilms (the channel he made to call her out) and on his twitch streams reacting to her videos, he wasn’t just critiquing her content with his fans for a laugh or whatever—
he and his audience have been actively working to find and credit the original creators of the clips she stole, contact them when appropriate to let them know that sssniperwolf was using their videos and profiting off of their hard work, and help them file DMCA takedowns against her
(if you haven’t seen one of his sssniperwolf bbbingo videos on jjjacksfilms, please go watch one for context. the bingo itself is pretty funny, but then it’s broken up by first hand accounts from smaller or casual creators—including CHILDREN—reaching out to Jack for support because sssniperwolf stole their content and made fun of them or other shitty behavior towards them. multiple people have shared that sssniperwolf’s theft damaged their self esteem and creative drive so badly that they stopped making videos. it’s fucking heartbreaking)
the upside is that, with Jack and others calling her out and encouraging the original creators to file DMCA takedowns against her for copyright infringement, they are making a real difference: multiple videos of hers have been edited and re-uploaded to remove clips from creators who filed complaints, in some cases enough to bring the video under 8 minutes so that it can’t get mid-roll ads anymore. there’s even a whole video that’s just gone now, completely deleted from her channel, because so many people have come forward to file takedowns against her, both on their own and directly because of Jack’s support.
she’s reacting so strongly because Jack has been standing up for and supporting her victims, and in doing so, has hurt her income.
it’s absolutely terrifying behavior but it’s also a sign that even though YT isn’t really doing anything, the fight against her is effective anyway. filing DMCA takedowns against freebooters and “reactors” like her works! that’s really exciting!
anyway keep pressuring Team YT to respond properly to this mess. also stan Jacksfilms, he’s one of the OGs on YT and has been such an important part of the community, encouraging and inspiring a lot of young creators, and fostering a very fun and collaborative environment with his fans. his iphone parody videos are hilarious.
